Our History

Ms. Sandy, the owner, has been in the child care business for over 30 years. Before moving to Oldham County in 1997, she worked for 9 years at Plainview Preschool (owned by her husband) in East Louisville. Plainview was one of the largest singly owned childcare centers in Louisville with a total enrollment of over 300 children.

After moving to Oldham County in 1997, Ms. Sandy opened KIDS HAVEN, by Sandy in July of 1998. She is highly involved in the community serving on the Oldham County Early Childhood Council, a member of the LaGrange Rotary Club, a member of the Oldham County Chamber & Economic Development, a member of the Oldham County Community Band, a member of the Oldham County Arts Association, and a member of LaGrange Southeast Christian Church.

Sandy and her husband, Dave, built the new KIDS HAVEN, by Sandy facility in 2017 where they currently do business.

Our Leadership Team

Sandy Johnson

President/Owner

Sandy is a graduate of Brownstown Central High School, has an A.A. in Business from Ball State University, has the Child Development Associates Credential and the Kentucky Director’s Credential.

Ms. Sandy previously worked at Plainview Preschool (owned by her husband) in Louisville for 9 years and opened KIDS HAVEN, by Sandy in 1998.

Mary Emma Johnson

Vice-President

Mary Emma studied Elementary Education at the University of Kentucky and completed her Master of Arts in Education from the University of the Cumberlands. She taught Kindergarten in Shelby County for several years.

Mary Emma strongly believes in the importance of incorporating social emotional learning activities within the classrooms to help promote and develop important lifelong skills. Mary Emma was brought up attending childcare and preschool and also worked at Kids Haven, owned by her Mother, Sandy, when she was in high school so she is no stranger to the business.

Makayla Flener

Center Director

Makayla is our Center Director and has been a valued member of the Kids Haven team since 2021. Makayla is a Trimble County High School graduate, has earned her Commonwealth Child Care Credential and has also previously served as a Lead Preschool Teacher.

Makayla has a strong passion for early childhood education and finds joy in supporting both the children and teachers at our center.

Ashley Foust

Assistant Director

As our Assistant Director and Lead Nursery Teacher, Ashley brings experience, dedication, and a passion for early childhood education to Kids Haven. She is a graduate of Oldham County High School and has earned her Commonwealth Child Care Credential.

Ashley is passionate about creating a safe, nurturing, and positive environment where children can learn and grow. She also enjoys supporting our staff and building strong relationships with families to ensure every child has the best possible experience.

The app used for communication is very helpful in keeping me in the loop on all of her daily activities and other reminders. The building itself is also top notch.
